The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory IIi - 1875 Words

The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory III (MCMI-III) was first presented in 1994 during a meeting of the American Psychological Association (Retziaff, 1996). This edition of the assessment along with the MCMI and the MCMI-II editions were developed by Theodore Millon, his daughter C. Millon and colleagues R. Davis and S. Grossman. Business Ethical Dilemma Era of Globalization

Question: Describe about the Business Ethical Dilemma for the Era of Globalization. Answer: Part 1: Description In this era of globalization, ethics have emerged as an important dimension of business (Whitaker Godwin, 2013). Today, the stakeholders expect that the organizations and employees should have ethical standards. In an organizational setting, people often come across various ethical dilemmas (Frederickson, 2013). The ethical dilemmas or the moral dilemmas could also occur in peoples personal life. Here, I would like to discuss an ethical dilemma of my professional life. I have not used the real names of the people and the organizations involved. I was working as a procurement officer in a small spare parts manufacturing firm in Australia. The company (ABD Inc.) was a mid-size spare parts manufacturing unit of 250 employees. We were a team of 7 people who used to handle the procurement for the firm. Our task was to meet the suppliers, negotiate about the prices and do the quality check. Mark was the procurement manager and I used to report directly to Mark. We used to work in very tig ht schedules and Mark demonstrated good confidence in his team members. We were rarely questioned about the procurement deal that we made. As a part of our daily work, we had to meet several new suppliers in the region and compare their offerings with the offerings of the existing supplier. As a part of my daily work, I meet with a supplier Frank. He was able to give the supplies at a lower price. When I enquired I found out that he usually import the products from China and as a result Frank had the price advantage. However, his products were not high quality products. A random sampling of few products demonstrated that the products lacked reliability. Therefore, I did not have any deal with Frank and I updated the same in the internal system of the company and I communicated the same to Mark. The very next week, I received a call from Mark to discuss the deal with Frank. He told me that there is a cost pressure from the senior management and ABD Inc. should close the deal with Frank. I told him about the quality of the products and I told him that this deal should not be signed. He insisted to have the deal with Frank, as it would be beneficial for ABD INC., Mark and procurement team of the company. I was not able to understand this at the beginning. Later, Mark told me that Frank approached him and guaranteed monthly gifts for a minimum business for $5000. In fact, Mark forced me to have the deal with Mark. Personally, I did not want to compromise on the quality and this was the reason that I rejected Frank as a supplier. But, after the meeting with Mark, I was in a big ethical dilemma. I was not sure about the way out, I tried but I was not able to convince Mark. I finally decided to escalate the things to the manager of Mark. Sara was the manager of Mark and I told the entire incident to her. Mark was not happy with my decision and Sara decided to cancel any deal with Frank. It was a bad mark on the professional career of Mark. However, I believe that this decision was good for the company in long term. Therefore, I would rate my decision as 8 out of 10. Part 2: Analysis The decision of escalating the things to Sara could be discussed from the perspective of various ethical theories. The three normative ethical theories and dilemma can be discussed as: The egoism theory of ethics as explained by Gobble (2015) suggest organizational ethics more often than not begins and ends at the organizational chart illustrating the who reports. Designing an organization to survive and support change will take moving around the formal lines on the organizational chart for an organization to become flatter and collaborative (Gobble, 2015). Lorinkova, Pearsall and Sims Jr. (2013) suggest that although empirical researchers advocate empowerment leadership over directive leadership to enhance team performances, the empirical data is not clear that it supports enhancing team performances. Gobble (2015) suggest empowered leadership will use behavior that emphasizes collaborative decision making the focus more on the development of knowledge and experiencing positive in terpersonal relationships. The egoism theory is a traditional theory of ethics and virtue. After the egoism theory, various new theories have emerged that holds well in the contemporary field of management. However, the egoism theory is still used widely across different areas of ethics. This theory suggests that the action is morally right if the action promotes the self-interest of actor (Plunkett Sundell, 2013). The interest could be a short-term interest or a long-term interest. Generally, the ethical egoism is associated with the long-term interest of the actor (Chakraborty Kumar, 2013). This ethical theory deals only with the actor and not with the surroundings or the environment of the actor. In this theory, the analysis of any decision is based on the personal or the self-interest (Jefferson Sacks, 2015). The application of this theory on the above ethical dilemma would suggest that I should have taken the step that was best suited for me (Blackstone Rustroom, 2006). When I was in the situation, I considered the wellbeing of organization. The application of this theory suggests that I should have analyzed the situation from my perspective (Elina Erika, 2012). For me, probably, the best alternative was to agree to the Marks decision. This way, I would hav e gathered his trust and confidence. It would have helped me to get early promotion. The egoism theory of normative ethics has the drawback that it could not be used from the perspective of multiple stakeholders. This theory provides only a singular view of the problem or issue at hand (Forcehimes, 2015). Based on my admittedly limited understanding of organizational design and ethics, I would argue that the egoism theory of normative ethics has had enduring impact on organizational design and ethics. I do believe, however, that it is difficult to separate completely the personal perspective and the organizational perspective when dealing with the ethical dilemmas in the professional scenarios (Ferrell, 2014). Utilitarianism is a theory in normative ethics holding that the best moral action is the one that maximizes utility. Utility is defined in various ways, but is usually related to the well being of sentient entities (Sternberg, 2012). The advocates of this theory believe that a successful organizational ethical values requires a deep understanding of the context for which the organization is being designed. This requires an understanding of the environment in which the firm operates, the business strategies and models it will use to compete, and the capabilities it needs to compete. The utilitarianism theory of ethics suggests that the decision should have increased my utility (Kaufmann Carter, 2011). Now, there are different ways to define the utility. Personally, I think that my utility is enhanced when my organization does well (Michael Greg, 2014). Therefore, in the context of above ethical dilemma, this theory would suggest that I had taken a correct decision (Mulvey, 2012). In an organizational setting, this theory can work bests when there is a synchronization in the definition of the utility of various stakeholders. According to Frooman (1999) to be really useful to a firm trying to manage its stakeholders, stakeholder theory must provide an account of how stakeholders try to manage a firm (p. 192). The first step to managing conflicting needs of stakeholders is to conduct a stakeholder analysis and determine which stakeholder group will have the greatest impact and conversely which organizational action will have the greatest impact onto the stakeholder group (Wood, 2012). According to Frooman (1999) urgency, legitimacy, and power are key stakeholders attributes, which an organization needs to pay attention (p. 193). To ignore or alienate stakeholders means the likelihood of failure (Boatright, 2006). The dilemma in utilitarianism theory of ethics is prioritizing which stakeholders have the most influence (Taran Bett, 2015). There are so many opinio ns and not all bear the same weight. A considerable action plan for these voices is in stakeholder mapping in order to prioritize interests and influence. Two main areas where stakeholders have the most influence that companies consider is in urgency and power (Ingenbleek Immink, 2010). Companies can identify the levels of stakeholder influence and strategize how to avoid the more contentious directions, focus on areas of common interests, or persuade, educate, or possibly reject stakeholder input (Taran Brett, 2015, p. 60). The most effective route of managing conflict appears to be in anticipating the conflict, identifying urgency, and either recognizing stakeholder power or who to give power to. This approach maximizes a best-case scenario (Mari Anna, 2013). In the end, there will most likely still be stakeholders whose wants were not met and are unsatisfied with company decisions. As the saying goes, you cant please everyone. The bottom line of utilitarianism ethical theory i s that the overall utility of the actor should be increased and I can say that this happen in my case (Knights, 2006). For me, the utility was all about the organizational values and wellbeing and my decision was able to safeguard and upheld the organizational values. It can be said that the utilitarianism theory of ethics is used widely in various personal and professional areas. The organizations have been using the utilitarianism theory of ethics to develop an ethical culture in the organization. It also enables the organization to uphold the moral values within the organization. Immanuel Kant gave the ethics theory of duty. He viewed knowledge of and acting on ones duty as the key element. Indeed, he saw context as being of minor importance (Cassirer, 2016). This ethical theory suggests that the action should be based on the duty (Huhtala Feldt, 2013). In the above case of ethical dilemma, there are two ways to apply this theory. Case 1: I can apply this theory as I have a duty towards my manager This case would suggest that I should fulfill all the request of my manager as that is the part of my duty (Ess, 2002). It means that I should not have escalated the things to Sara. It was my duty to obey Mark and the ethical practice was to agree to whatever Mark had to say. This theory suggests that duty is the priority of the employees of the organization and it is important that all the stakeholders of the organization must fulfill all their duties. Case 2: I can apply this theory as I have a duty towards my organization This case would suggest that the employees should look for long-term duties and not short-term duties. With the bigger picture in mind, I can realize that I was serving my organization and I was not serving my manager (Boening, 2006). Therefore, any commitment of duty, that I had, was towards the organization and not the manager. This case would suggest that my action to escalate the things to Sara was a good step as it helped the organization to avoid any trouble in the later point of time. It is expected that the employees would continue to show high ethical standards towards their organization. It is also important that the organizations should create a platform where employee can fulfill their ethical duties. This theory suggests that the people should act rationally in the moral and ethical dilemmas (Jung, 2010). The advocates of this theory suggest that man is the moral actor and the actions should be based on the duty that binds the man with the organization (Elspeth Susan, 2012). The Kant theory is also used widely in the organizations. This theory of ethics has gained far wider acceptance in the large organizations and it is expected that the use of this theory would further increase in the professional setting. All the above theories have practical implications in the contemporary field of management. It is important that the people should have a holistic understanding of these theories before selecting any particular theory. Part 3: Self Reflection When I look back at the ethical dilemma, I have a feeling of satisfaction as I feel that I took the right course of action. In my opinion, understanding and acting to address the ethical and strategic interests of all stakeholders is essential if organizations are to avoid public battles with stakeholders that damage trust and create ill will (Minka, 2014). Still, I am not sure what I should have done differently. Perhaps there are simply some circumstances when doing all the right things still produces unfavorable results. When I analyze the application of the three theories to the decision that I took, I feel happy with the utilitarianism ethical theory. I feel happy with this theory as this theory suggests that my action was correct. I am personally, not very happy with the application of egoism theory of ethics as this theory considers only my views and perspective and not the perspective of organization. This is the reason that the decision that I took is not in line with the application of egoism theory of ethics in this ethical dilemma. I even like the Kants theory of duties. I think, the application of this theory is in line with my decision if consider my duty and my loyalty towards the organization. I have personally liked the utilitarianism ethical theory as this theory considers the viewpoint of various stakeholders in the organization. If I were in the same situation again, I would take the same decision. I do not want to go against my manager. However, I would do this if my decision is for the long-term benefit of the organization as in the end, me and my manager serves the organization. I agree with Mark that for-profit organizations need to balance the interests of all of their stakeholders, but that they must also generate profits for shareholders and ethical values for the organization. If I am in the same situation I would again escalate the things as it would be morally correct path. I can say that I have learned a lot from this ethical dilemma. All the three theories of normative ethics are effective. The application of these theories can vary based on the individual cases (Chao Chen, 2016). It is important that the people should realize that the application of these theories could produce different results. In the end, right or wrong are very subjective terms and the definition of the words like ethics and moral values can change from people to people and from organization to organization. I believe that it is important that the right and wrong at the personal level should match with the right and wrong at the organizational level. It would enable the organizations to get the maximum from the employees and it would also ensure that the employees can work with high ethical standards. History Of Punk Rock Essays - Culture Of New York City, Punk Rock

History of Punk Rock Did you know that the first commercially successful punk band was the Sex Pistols? Then came groups like Black Flag, Husker Du, and Bad Brains. Punk was invented in Britain in the mid Seventies. The first American punk started in a New York club called CBGB's. CBGB's would attract a crowd of about 500 with its Sunday-afternoon hard-core matinees. The concerts would be over by a reasonable time so kids could get home to eat dinner with their parents. In this paper we will take a look at some history and aspects of punk rock over the years. Slam Dancing Slam dancing has been popular through the history of punk. You may have heard of called "mashing" or "stage diving." Mashing is just a big game of bumper cars like you played when you were a kid. I think Natalie Jacobson who is dating the lead singer of "Murphy's Law" describes stage diving best when says, "It's like diving into a human carpet. Something like the old kids' trust game. Just my way of getting into it. Gospel people got their thing, I got mine."1 Politics Some punks consider themselves Nazis', or are concerned with issues like peace, racism, and nuclear war. Most punk is against parental, musical, and political authorities. On the other hand some isn't. Bob Mould of Husker Du talks about politics quite frequently in his songs. I don't write about politics because I'm not an expert. Some bands find it very necessary to claim they're politically relevant when in actuality they don't know shit about politics. Not informing people is much better than misinforming people. We're sort of like reporters in a way. Reporters of our own mental state. Reporters of the state of the air. Consciousness. Of the day. We make personal statements.2 Friends Most punks that live in small towns have trouble making friends. They find it hard to relate to most people. Sixteen- year-old Becca Levine finds it hard to make friends in her small town. She comes from a family of divorced parents that never have understood her. Her mother thinks it's just a phase she's going through. As Becca Quotes, "Parents around here treat me like I'm kind of weird."3 She has met someone from New York City that understands her. She meets with him at concerts at clubs like the Ritz or CBGB's. She met someone else also. Someone about 20 minutes away from her hometown who wrote an ad in a national magazine looking for someone to associate with that would understand him. He got a lot of responses, but when he saw the letter from Becca he called her right up. They met for the first time at a Hard-Core show in New York City. But still no one in her hometown understands her. Fitting in with the New York hard-core scene is one of her goals. Clothing Punk has its very own unique style. Although punk sports hard edges, bright colors, shaved heads, leather jackets, Mohawks, and army boots. You can't really tell if a person is a punk by the way they dress or do their hair. Wanda Draper, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Oklahoma says, "We need to look at their reactions and responses to what goes on around them in everyday life. When we know that this is a fad-that it is an effort to be a part of the 'group'-we can usually relax."4 Development of Punk Through the years some punk has had influences from country to the Grateful Dead. Some of this may not even be punk at all. Take Rancid's song "Time Bomb" off their latest album, "...And Out Come the Wolves"5 for instance. It is their rendition of Reggae. Most punk groups don't make much money at all. Once in a while a punk group will hit it big time but that is very rare. Paul Westerbert, lead singer of the Replacements quotes, "We are the hungriest band I've ever seen. We get in the van and drive to a town, play, stay at a friend's house. Wake up when they throw us out. Drive the rest of the day. Play the next night. We get fifteen dollars a day. And when we're home, we don't get nothing. We're way in debt. We own a van, it breaks down, and you know when you play that the gig money goes to pay for the broken- down van. We're used to it.6 Relation Punk is also related to Hard-Core and Ska. During the last ten years, the agendum of higher education institutions at a national and international level had been placed on by a set of generic skills, qualities and attributes that support lifelong learning. There are mainly four major factors which have led the concept of a set of generic skills being placed on higher education agenda, they are employment, government, society and higher education institutions themselves. Among the set of generic skills, there is a general agreement which support lifelong learning at a national and international level. In this essay we will discuss these major factors separately, then we will focus on to what extent does a set of generic skills that support lifelong learning can get agreement at a national and international level. To begin with, the most obvious factor in this case is employment. Because of the external pressure from employment sector, higher education institutions have to put generic skills on their agendum, otherwise their graduates can’t find satisfactory job (Jones, 2001). Employment sector can be regarded as customer in this case, and higher education institutions are entities that provide their products- graduates to the customers. For example, in recent years, many multi-national companies pay much more attention on their employees’ communication skills, because their employees have a variety of backgrounds, so whether they can express themselves correctly or communicate with each other without misunderstanding become a significant issue. To this regard, employers ask for employees with good communication skills, then higher education institutions put this skill into their agendum. In other words, most of universities nowadays have to make responses on their agendum as soo n as possible as long as employment sector make any changes about its requirements of future employees (NCVER, 2003). So, employment sector becomes the most obvious factor that promotes universities put generic skills on their agendum. Secondly, government is another important factor that put generic skills being placed on the higher education agenda. Recently, governments have a higher standards of its people in such a fast moving world in order to have highly responsible citizens (Jones, 2001), so governments require their people equipped with generic skills whatever their occupations are. At the same time, there are still some universities do not want to put generic skills on their agendum, to attract these universities’ attention, governments (refers to western and Australian governments in particular) provide funding and quality assurance that linked with generic skills (James, Lefoe, Hadi, 2004). These procedures, in turn, promote generic skills been spreaded among higher education institutions largely. As a result, government become another important factor that place a set of generic skills which support lifelong learning on higher education agenda, using grants and policies. Another factor that support integration of generic skills and higher education institution agenda is society. With the development of globalisation, the society becomes more and more competitive (NCVER, 2003), and employees nowadays have to compete with more competitors, maybe two or three times more than 10 years ago to get a good job. In such a fierce society or world, higher education institutions should try their best to equip their graduates with more advanced skills, or special selling points, in this case, they refer to generic skills. Therefore, universities are always ready to make any changes that relate to generic skills to their agendum, and inform students and employers about the changes as soon as possible. This can enable students make more informed choice on which university would suit them the best, universities can also promote themselves to potential employers (Fraser, 2001), thus increase their reputation. However, for universities which do not put generic skills into their agendum, it will be very difficult to attract potential students and get grants for their research projects unless they have very high reputation, like Cambridge or Harvard University, but such universities usually have their own generic skills been placed on their agendum. Consequently, the concept of a set of generic skills being placed on higher education agenda because of the competitive society. Last but not least, higher education institutions themselves also play a part in the process of putting generic skills on their agendum. Since they want to gain a higher reputation, they have to show that they provide the latest skills and knowledge, and their graduates are the best equipped to fit into future work places. So universities are always eager to make any changes that apply to their agendum, especially for generic skills, which is the focus during recent years. For those universities that do not have generic skills in their agendum, it will be very difficult for them to get a high reputation at a national and international level. So, there won’t be many students who want to continue their study in such universities, and governments won’t provide funding to such universities. For this reason, most of the universities put generic skills into their agendum for their own good. Although there are lots of advantages provided if higher education institutions put the concept of a set of generic skills that support lifelong learning into their agendum, yet some people still argue that there is no point for universities to do this. They argue that the pursuit of the goal of graduates with desirable generic attributes and skills, equipped to participate effectively in society for life, is either unrealistic (Kemp and Seagraves 1995; Drummond, Nixon Wiltshire 1997; Preston 1999) or a ‘wasteful chimera-hunt’†¦which ‘should now be abandoned’ (Hyland and Johnson 1998). Personally, I do agree with this point of view to some extent, cause we do not expect higher education institutions teach their graduates everything about generic skills, there is no point to do so, and also unrealistic. Universities can only teach their graduates specified knowledge, and some generic skills, graduates should develop the other generic skills through ever yday life. In addition, to what extent a person can develop enough generic skills is still in question, since everybody have different characters, moral and ethical standards, so what is included in a set of generic skills in different people’s point of view is slightly different. Therefore, even the higher education institutions claim that they have a set of generic skills in their agendum, we still can’t expect that every graduates from the university can have the same generic skills. There is a general agreement about what is included in a set of generic skills, qualities and attributes that support lifelong learning at a national and international level. However, the contents and name of the contents in a set of generic skills in different countries are slightly different from each other, yet they are the same in essence. For example, Jones (2001) categorize generic skills into four groups: 1. the acquisition of a body of disciplinary knowledge, 2. the critical understanding which comes from the communication, application and evaluation of a body of knowledge, 3. the commitment to ethical action and social responsibility, 4. a capacity for employment and lifelong learning. However, in NCVER (2003), generic skills are splited into 6 categories: 1. basic or fundamental skills, 2. people-related skills, 3. conceptual or thinking skills, 4. personal skills and attributes, 5. skills related to the business world, 6. skills related to the community. From these two dif ferent articles, it seems that there is great difference between what is included in generic skills at the first glance, but they are the same if you study them a little bit. For example, body of disciplinary knowledge in Jones (2001) is the same with basic or fundamental skills in NCVER (2003), and the commitment to ethical action and social responsibility in Jones (2001) is an equivalent to skills related to the community in NCVE (2003). Moreover, these two kinds of ‘generic skills’ all include lifelong learning in their contents, such as the fourth one in Jones (2001), and conceptual or thinking skills as it is so called in NCVER (2003). So, generic skills which have different names in different countries are basically the same, and they all support lifelong learning. To sum up, there are four major factors that put the concept of a set of generic skills which support lifelong learning on higher education institutions agendum at a national and international level, they are employment, government, society and higher education itself. In additon, there is a general agreement about what is included in a set of generic skills that support lifelong learning at a national and international level. However, I do think our expectation is too high on higher education institutions, because universities can’t teach their graduates everything included in a set of generic skills, so we should release some pressure from universities, and put it on to graduates, employers, and society as a whole. This management is obviously the United States government that was actually working with the culprits in establishment of these particular noncompetitive rates at the well known Countrywide Financial. There...This has gone on to be a major problem since the level of control by politicians on leaders and presidents of large companies is overwhelming. This in the end of the day makes the managers, CEOs and the chief executives like Angelo seem weaker and puppet to these politicians. This makes them to go cahoots with them since they do not have a choice or the deals are very sweet. This should be limited thoroughly by the use of legislation and policies that are relevant and applicable with this particular matter. The degree of this fraud crime was very colossal. Angelo Mozilo was charged fines that amounted to $67.5 million and was forced to accept a lifetime ban. This ban was implemented so that he will never serve as a director or officer of any public or private company. I chose this topic based on the need to educate others on the signs of workplace discrimination. Job discrimination in the workplace can effect many people in many different situations. This particular study chooses to focus on those individuals living with a terminal illness. Discrimination in the workplace can occur more frequently than many expect in this advanced society. The history of job discrimination in general is vast and covers many different areas. In America, the history of discrimination in the area of employment options is a sobering one that reaches far beneath the surface of what many want to know about our seemingly â€Å"fair† society. Broad prejudices against people with illnesses survive at the threshold of the new millennium. Those prejudices, infecting those familiar and unfamiliar with the severity of functional illnesses determine the way â€Å"non-ill† people view and act toward people living and working with illnesses. Many people, however, still fail to recognize the pervasive and damaging nature of â€Å"affliction† prejudice. Deep-seated psychological and sociological mechanisms give rise to prejudice against people with illnesses. While some or all of these mechanisms also contribute to discrimination against other minority groups, their operation in the context of illness has unique characteristics that make affliction prejudice extremely difficult to identify and eradicate. Workplace screening for predisposition to illness was championed during the 1930’s, as it became clear that some workers exposed to toxins on the job became ill while others did not. Such screening is an increasingly frequent though highly controversial practice in industry today. Screening prior to employment can help individuals avoid jobs that could be hazardous to their health. But testing workers for genetic susceptibility after they become ill could be a way for employers to avoid responsibility for workers’ safety and compensation claims, shifting the blame to â€Å"genetically predisposed† workers while ignoring workplace hazards. The work that Bailey House has done in the community and for the community affected by the illnesses related to HIV/AIDS is remarkable and pushes them to strive toward unspeakable goals. Hopefully some of the landmark cases that have come through this organization will help to dispel stereotypes and stigmatism’s of those living with terminal illnesses that still insist on being a part of the workforce. Until then, Human Resource Management will continue to play a role in mandating fair and just treatment of those living with illnesses that are thrust into the workforce. This study has shown that barriers can be broken and optimism for a brighter future may still exist.

It’s Never Too Late Essay

I’ve always been the student who made decent grades and yet never participated in any extracurricular activities. I danced for a couple of years when I was younger, but as I grew older, I became shy. When I got to high school, I became distracted and my grades starting declining. I knew I had to start joining clubs or be active to have a good resume. I needed a reality check to stop slacking and get serious before it was too late. Finally my junior year came and I had a new attitude. Starting the last week of summer before entering my junior year was volleyball season. At first I was hesitant about playing and I was quite nervous since I’ve never played before. Some of my peers encouraged me to try it and it was the greatest decision I have made in high school. Even though I started playing a sport near the end of my high school career, I don’t regret the route I took. Becoming a student athlete was tough on my schedule but I got acclimated fast. Luckily, my coach was also my math teacher so he was adamant about me being a successful student and athlete. Since I never played a sport I never felt as tired as when I am finish with drills after practice but I kept my grades high. While playing volleyball, I have learned to manage my time wisely. I knew if I had practice until six in the afternoon and there was homework to do afterwards, then there was no time to spare. I now greatly value time management and it has helped me improve in many facets of my life. My outcome of playing volleyball was my greatest achievement in high school. I learned how to schedule my days wisely, be an effective team player and overall better student. It’s true when they say â€Å"your junior year in high school is your hardest year†, but I can say with pride and joy that I overcame that theory. I made the best grades in my first semester in contrast to my academic performance in my freshman and sophomore years. It is now my senior year, I’m playing volleyball again, and hopefully I will be offered many scholarships from different colleges to play this sport.

Shakespeare Sonnet 2 - Analysis

Shakespeare’s Sonnet 2: When Forty Winters Shall Besiege Thy Brow is interesting because it further expresses his desire for the subject of his poem to breed. This theme is introduced in Sonnet 1 and continues through to poem 17. The poem advises the fair youth that when he is old and looks withered and terrible he can, at least, point to his son and say that he has passed on his beauty to him. However, if he does not breed, he will have to live with the shame of simply looking old and withered. In short, a child would compensate for the ravages of aging. Through metaphor, the poem suggests that you can live your life through your child if necessary. The child would provide evidence that he was once beautiful and worthy of praise. Sonnet 2: Facts Sequence:  Second sonnet in the  Fair Youth Sonnets.Key Themes:  Old age, procreation, a child providing evidence of one’s worth, Winter, obsession with the fair youth’s beauty.Style: Written in iambic pentameter and follows the traditional sonnet form. Sonnet 2: Translation When forty winters have passed, you will have aged and become wrinkly. Your youthful looks, so admired as they are now, will be gone. Then if anyone asks you where your beauty lies, where the worth of your youthful, lusty days is evident, you could say: â€Å"Within mine own deep sunken eyes.† But that would be shameful and not praiseworthy if you didn’t have a child to show off and say this is evidence of my beauty and the reason for my aging. The child’s beauty is proof of mine: â€Å"Proving his beauty by succession thine.† The child would be youthful and beautiful when you are old and would remind you of being young and warm-blooded when you are cold. Sonnet 2: Analysis Being forty years old in Shakespeare’s time would likely have been considered to be a â€Å"good old age†, so when forty winters had passed, you would have been considered old. In this sonnet, the poet is giving almost fatherly advice to the fair youth. He does not appear to be interested in the fair youth romantically himself in this poem but is encouraging a heterosexual union. However, the preoccupation with the fair youth and his life choices soon becomes quite overwhelming and obsessive. The sonnet takes a subtly different tack from Sonnet 1 (where he says that if the fair youth does not breed it would be selfish of him and the world would regret it). In this sonnet, the poet suggests that the fair youth would feel shame and would personally regret it himself – perhaps the speaker does so to appeal to the narcissistic side of the fair youth, pointed to in Sonnet 1. Perhaps a narcissist would not care what the world thinks, but would care what he may feel himself in later life?
