History of Punk Rock Did you know that the first commercially successful punk band was the Sex Pistols? Then came groups like Black Flag, Husker Du, and Bad Brains. Punk was invented in Britain in the mid Seventies. The first American punk started in a New York club called CBGB's. CBGB's would attract a crowd of about 500 with its Sunday-afternoon hard-core matinees. The concerts would be over by a reasonable time so kids could get home to eat dinner with their parents. In this paper we will take a look at some history and aspects of punk rock over the years. Slam Dancing Slam dancing has been popular through the history of punk. You may have heard of called "mashing" or "stage diving." Mashing is just a big game of bumper cars like you played when you were a kid. I think Natalie Jacobson who is dating the lead singer of "Murphy's Law" describes stage diving best when says, "It's like diving into a human carpet. Something like the old kids' trust game. Just my way of getting into it. Gospel people got their thing, I got mine."1 Politics Some punks consider themselves Nazis', or are concerned with issues like peace, racism, and nuclear war. Most punk is against parental, musical, and political authorities. On the other hand some isn't. Bob Mould of Husker Du talks about politics quite frequently in his songs. I don't write about politics because I'm not an expert. Some bands find it very necessary to claim they're politically relevant when in actuality they don't know shit about politics. Not informing people is much better than misinforming people. We're sort of like reporters in a way. Reporters of our own mental state. Reporters of the state of the air. Consciousness. Of the day. We make personal statements.2 Friends Most punks that live in small towns have trouble making friends. They find it hard to relate to most people. Sixteen- year-old Becca Levine finds it hard to make friends in her small town. She comes from a family of divorced parents that never have understood her. Her mother thinks it's just a phase she's going through. As Becca Quotes, "Parents around here treat me like I'm kind of weird."3 She has met someone from New York City that understands her. She meets with him at concerts at clubs like the Ritz or CBGB's. She met someone else also. Someone about 20 minutes away from her hometown who wrote an ad in a national magazine looking for someone to associate with that would understand him. He got a lot of responses, but when he saw the letter from Becca he called her right up. They met for the first time at a Hard-Core show in New York City. But still no one in her hometown understands her. Fitting in with the New York hard-core scene is one of her goals. Clothing Punk has its very own unique style. Although punk sports hard edges, bright colors, shaved heads, leather jackets, Mohawks, and army boots. You can't really tell if a person is a punk by the way they dress or do their hair. Wanda Draper, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Oklahoma says, "We need to look at their reactions and responses to what goes on around them in everyday life. When we know that this is a fad-that it is an effort to be a part of the 'group'-we can usually relax."4 Development of Punk Through the years some punk has had influences from country to the Grateful Dead. Some of this may not even be punk at all. Take Rancid's song "Time Bomb" off their latest album, "...And Out Come the Wolves"5 for instance. It is their rendition of Reggae. Most punk groups don't make much money at all. Once in a while a punk group will hit it big time but that is very rare. Paul Westerbert, lead singer of the Replacements quotes, "We are the hungriest band I've ever seen. We get in the van and drive to a town, play, stay at a friend's house. Wake up when they throw us out. Drive the rest of the day. Play the next night. We get fifteen dollars a day. And when we're home, we don't get nothing. We're way in debt. We own a van, it breaks down, and you know when you play that the gig money goes to pay for the broken- down van. We're used to it.6 Relation Punk is also related to Hard-Core and Ska. Is there general agreement at a national and international level about what is included in ‘ a set of generic skills, qualities and attributes that support lifelong learning’? During the last ten years, the agendum of higher education institutions at a national and international level had been placed on by a set of generic skills, qualities and attributes that support lifelong learning. There are mainly four major factors which have led the concept of a set of generic skills being placed on higher education agenda, they are employment, government, society and higher education institutions themselves. Among the set of generic skills, there is a general agreement which support lifelong learning at a national and international level. In this essay we will discuss these major factors separately, then we will focus on to what extent does a set of generic skills that support lifelong learning can get agreement at a national and international level. To begin with, the most obvious factor in this case is employment. Because of the external pressure from employment sector, higher education institutions have to put generic skills on their agendum, otherwise their graduates can’t find satisfactory job (Jones, 2001). Employment sector can be regarded as customer in this case, and higher education institutions are entities that provide their products- graduates to the customers. For example, in recent years, many multi-national companies pay much more attention on their employees’ communication skills, because their employees have a variety of backgrounds, so whether they can express themselves correctly or communicate with each other without misunderstanding become a significant issue. To this regard, employers ask for employees with good communication skills, then higher education institutions put this skill into their agendum. In other words, most of universities nowadays have to make responses on their agendum as soo n as possible as long as employment sector make any changes about its requirements of future employees (NCVER, 2003). So, employment sector becomes the most obvious factor that promotes universities put generic skills on their agendum. Secondly, government is another important factor that put generic skills being placed on the higher education agenda. Recently, governments have a higher standards of its people in such a fast moving world in order to have highly responsible citizens (Jones, 2001), so governments require their people equipped with generic skills whatever their occupations are. At the same time, there are still some universities do not want to put generic skills on their agendum, to attract these universities’ attention, governments (refers to western and Australian governments in particular) provide funding and quality assurance that linked with generic skills (James, Lefoe, Hadi, 2004). These procedures, in turn, promote generic skills been spreaded among higher education institutions largely. As a result, government become another important factor that place a set of generic skills which support lifelong learning on higher education agenda, using grants and policies. Another factor that support integration of generic skills and higher education institution agenda is society. With the development of globalisation, the society becomes more and more competitive (NCVER, 2003), and employees nowadays have to compete with more competitors, maybe two or three times more than 10 years ago to get a good job. In such a fierce society or world, higher education institutions should try their best to equip their graduates with more advanced skills, or special selling points, in this case, they refer to generic skills. Therefore, universities are always ready to make any changes that relate to generic skills to their agendum, and inform students and employers about the changes as soon as possible. This can enable students make more informed choice on which university would suit them the best, universities can also promote themselves to potential employers (Fraser, 2001), thus increase their reputation. However, for universities which do not put generic skills into their agendum, it will be very difficult to attract potential students and get grants for their research projects unless they have very high reputation, like Cambridge or Harvard University, but such universities usually have their own generic skills been placed on their agendum. Consequently, the concept of a set of generic skills being placed on higher education agenda because of the competitive society. Last but not least, higher education institutions themselves also play a part in the process of putting generic skills on their agendum. Since they want to gain a higher reputation, they have to show that they provide the latest skills and knowledge, and their graduates are the best equipped to fit into future work places. So universities are always eager to make any changes that apply to their agendum, especially for generic skills, which is the focus during recent years. For those universities that do not have generic skills in their agendum, it will be very difficult for them to get a high reputation at a national and international level. So, there won’t be many students who want to continue their study in such universities, and governments won’t provide funding to such universities. For this reason, most of the universities put generic skills into their agendum for their own good. Although there are lots of advantages provided if higher education institutions put the concept of a set of generic skills that support lifelong learning into their agendum, yet some people still argue that there is no point for universities to do this. They argue that the pursuit of the goal of graduates with desirable generic attributes and skills, equipped to participate effectively in society for life, is either unrealistic (Kemp and Seagraves 1995; Drummond, Nixon Wiltshire 1997; Preston 1999) or a ‘wasteful chimera-hunt’†¦which ‘should now be abandoned’ (Hyland and Johnson 1998). Personally, I do agree with this point of view to some extent, cause we do not expect higher education institutions teach their graduates everything about generic skills, there is no point to do so, and also unrealistic. Universities can only teach their graduates specified knowledge, and some generic skills, graduates should develop the other generic skills through ever yday life. In addition, to what extent a person can develop enough generic skills is still in question, since everybody have different characters, moral and ethical standards, so what is included in a set of generic skills in different people’s point of view is slightly different. Therefore, even the higher education institutions claim that they have a set of generic skills in their agendum, we still can’t expect that every graduates from the university can have the same generic skills. There is a general agreement about what is included in a set of generic skills, qualities and attributes that support lifelong learning at a national and international level. However, the contents and name of the contents in a set of generic skills in different countries are slightly different from each other, yet they are the same in essence. For example, Jones (2001) categorize generic skills into four groups: 1. the acquisition of a body of disciplinary knowledge, 2. the critical understanding which comes from the communication, application and evaluation of a body of knowledge, 3. the commitment to ethical action and social responsibility, 4. a capacity for employment and lifelong learning. However, in NCVER (2003), generic skills are splited into 6 categories: 1. basic or fundamental skills, 2. people-related skills, 3. conceptual or thinking skills, 4. personal skills and attributes, 5. skills related to the business world, 6. skills related to the community. From these two dif ferent articles, it seems that there is great difference between what is included in generic skills at the first glance, but they are the same if you study them a little bit. For example, body of disciplinary knowledge in Jones (2001) is the same with basic or fundamental skills in NCVER (2003), and the commitment to ethical action and social responsibility in Jones (2001) is an equivalent to skills related to the community in NCVE (2003). Moreover, these two kinds of ‘generic skills’ all include lifelong learning in their contents, such as the fourth one in Jones (2001), and conceptual or thinking skills as it is so called in NCVER (2003). So, generic skills which have different names in different countries are basically the same, and they all support lifelong learning. To sum up, there are four major factors that put the concept of a set of generic skills which support lifelong learning on higher education institutions agendum at a national and international level, they are employment, government, society and higher education itself. In additon, there is a general agreement about what is included in a set of generic skills that support lifelong learning at a national and international level. However, I do think our expectation is too high on higher education institutions, because universities can’t teach their graduates everything included in a set of generic skills, so we should release some pressure from universities, and put it on to graduates, employers, and society as a whole. This management is obviously the United States government that was actually working with the culprits in establishment of these particular noncompetitive rates at the well known Countrywide Financial. There...This has gone on to be a major problem since the level of control by politicians on leaders and presidents of large companies is overwhelming. This in the end of the day makes the managers, CEOs and the chief executives like Angelo seem weaker and puppet to these politicians. This makes them to go cahoots with them since they do not have a choice or the deals are very sweet. This should be limited thoroughly by the use of legislation and policies that are relevant and applicable with this particular matter. The degree of this fraud crime was very colossal. Angelo Mozilo was charged fines that amounted to $67.5 million and was forced to accept a lifetime ban. This ban was implemented so that he will never serve as a director or officer of any public or private company. This is a meager settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission since he is one of the people responsible directly for the 2008 financial crisis. He should have been jailed without any chances of parole so as to teach the rest of the CEOs and the directors of public companies not to repeat the same mistake again. With the clashing of cultural values between people from different nations because of the effects of globalization within the current system of things, the past issues of human relationship had both been increased in possibilities of being resolved or even the possibilities being worsened. This idea is greatly relevant to the case of an expatriate employee of a certain company, which is already becoming a main concern for the business society. Many cases of an expatriate employee already resulted to resignation due to staggering problems brought by the socialization process (Keough, 453-459). Thus to address this social dilemma, socialization of a new person mainly an expatriate employee must be given concern especially the communication strategies that are relevant to the process.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Certainly, training managers to be cross culturally sensitive in this matter is a serious task to take into consideration. How then are the procedures supposed to be dealt with? First, the realization of diversity should be implemented thus helping the individuals concerned take full charge of their duty when the issue comes to becoming highly involved in a multicultural working environment. Next is the implementation of normalizing rules. As managers, these individuals should realize that they are in power to put an end to the dilemma that may be caused by human differences at work. Thirdly, making the managers competent enough in handling such cases of cultural diversity lies in the understanding of he said individuals of the fact that humans are indeed in different measures of both cultural and personal diversity that should be fully recognized by everyone especially at work so as to be able to establish a lot more responsive environment at work. I chose this topic based on the need to educate others on the signs of workplace discrimination. Job discrimination in the workplace can effect many people in many different situations. This particular study chooses to focus on those individuals living with a terminal illness. Discrimination in the workplace can occur more frequently than many expect in this advanced society. The history of job discrimination in general is vast and covers many different areas. In America, the history of discrimination in the area of employment options is a sobering one that reaches far beneath the surface of what many want to know about our seemingly â€Å"fair† society. Broad prejudices against people with illnesses survive at the threshold of the new millennium. Those prejudices, infecting those familiar and unfamiliar with the severity of functional illnesses determine the way â€Å"non-ill† people view and act toward people living and working with illnesses. Many people, however, still fail to recognize the pervasive and damaging nature of â€Å"affliction† prejudice. Deep-seated psychological and sociological mechanisms give rise to prejudice against people with illnesses. While some or all of these mechanisms also contribute to discrimination against other minority groups, their operation in the context of illness has unique characteristics that make affliction prejudice extremely difficult to identify and eradicate. Workplace screening for predisposition to illness was championed during the 1930’s, as it became clear that some workers exposed to toxins on the job became ill while others did not. Such screening is an increasingly frequent though highly controversial practice in industry today. Screening prior to employment can help individuals avoid jobs that could be hazardous to their health. But testing workers for genetic susceptibility after they become ill could be a way for employers to avoid responsibility for workers’ safety and compensation claims, shifting the blame to â€Å"genetically predisposed† workers while ignoring workplace hazards. Hopefully some of the landmark cases that have come through this organization will help to dispel stereotypes and stigmatism’s of those living with terminal illnesses that still insist on being a part of the workforce. Until then, Human Resource Management will continue to play a role in mandating fair and just treatment of those living with illnesses that are thrust into the workforce. This study has shown that barriers can be broken and optimism for a brighter future may still exist.

It’s Never Too Late Essay

I’ve always been the student who made decent grades and yet never participated in any extracurricular activities. I danced for a couple of years when I was younger, but as I grew older, I became shy. When I got to high school, I became distracted and my grades starting declining. I knew I had to start joining clubs or be active to have a good resume. I needed a reality check to stop slacking and get serious before it was too late. Finally my junior year came and I had a new attitude. Starting the last week of summer before entering my junior year was volleyball season. At first I was hesitant about playing and I was quite nervous since I’ve never played before. Some of my peers encouraged me to try it and it was the greatest decision I have made in high school. Even though I started playing a sport near the end of my high school career, I don’t regret the route I took. Becoming a student athlete was tough on my schedule but I got acclimated fast. Luckily, my coach was also my math teacher so he was adamant about me being a successful student and athlete. Since I never played a sport I never felt as tired as when I am finish with drills after practice but I kept my grades high. While playing volleyball, I have learned to manage my time wisely. I knew if I had practice until six in the afternoon and there was homework to do afterwards, then there was no time to spare. I now greatly value time management and it has helped me improve in many facets of my life. My outcome of playing volleyball was my greatest achievement in high school. I learned how to schedule my days wisely, be an effective team player and overall better student. It’s true when they say â€Å"your junior year in high school is your hardest year†, but I can say with pride and joy that I overcame that theory. I made the best grades in my first semester in contrast to my academic performance in my freshman and sophomore years. It is now my senior year, I’m playing volleyball again, and hopefully I will be offered many scholarships from different colleges to play this sport.
